Overview
A standalone Tale of Tsushima in the Iki Island region, told by the people living under the occupation rather than by anyone commanding it.
Caretakers of the Eagle is a standalone Tale of Tsushima in Iki Island — not attached to an ally questline, and told from inside the occupation rather than above it.
The side tales are where the game shows what the invasion costs people who were never going to be defended by eighty samurai on a beach. They are short, and collectively they are most of the game’s texture.
In the game’s own framing: A temple on a mountain that the Mongols have left completely alone, which is the suspicious part.

Full walkthroughSpoilers
- 01Survey the temple grounds
Climb the left hillside path from the quest giver. Inspect the people by the tents, the cart beside the temple, and the guard at the entrance. Survey points are not decoration — each one you mark puts an objective or a hazard on your map, and skipping them means finding the same things the hard way.
- 02Learn about the caretakers
Jin puts on a disguise automatically. Go down and speak to the Warden at the main building entrance.
- 03Gather information
Downstairs, the woman holding a baby wrapped in white cloth, then the man in front of the house on the left.
- 04Find the truth
Go around that house to the hole beneath it and listen to what is being said under the floor.
- 05Rest by the campfire
Upstairs, and wait until every caretaker is asleep.
- 06Rescue the captives
Slide under into the basement and free the first group. Anything with a red skull is about to execute someone.
Watch outA marked enemy is going for someone you have to keep alive.
- 07Free Ito
In the next hut.
- 08Save Toukichi
Ito’s brother, at the campfire outside Ito’s building.
- 09Clear the temple
Back upstairs, everything around the main structure — the Shaman first. Kill the Shaman before anything else — while he is chanting every Mongol near him hits harder, moves faster and blocks better, so removing him is worth more than removing two ordinary soldiers.
- 10Enter the temple
Through the side entrance.
- 11Defeat the last guards
Two of them inside.
- 12Confront Zehnshin
Speak with the poisoned monk, and play the flute.
Enemies in this tale, and how to fight them
Strengths
- Shaman — Kill first, before anything else on this list. A Shaman does not fight you directly — he chants, and while he is chanting every Mongol around him hits harder, moves faster and blocks better. Killing him is worth more than killing any two of the others. Kunai to stagger, then a heavy attack, is the fastest answer; sustained Wind Stance pressure also works. Shamans usually stand back from the line, often on rocks or ruins, so the bow is frequently the cleanest route.
Rewards
- Minor Legend IncreaseA smaller step toward the next Legend rank — the size a side tale, a liberated settlement or a cleared encounter gives.
- Minor Defense CharmA silver charm. Minor charms are weaker than major ones and go in the minor slots — you start with two major slots and unlock up to four minor ones by honouring Inari Shrines, for six equipped at once.
- +10 LinenUpgrade material. Silk, linen and leather are what armourers and swordsmiths charge to improve your gear.
