Overview
Yarikawa's reputation was written by the people who defeated it. This mission is about what that reputation costs.
One of the Toyotama chapters that follows the recruitment of Clan Yarikawa, The Coward of Yarikawa continues the act's central argument: that the island's rulers and the island's people have very different accounts of the same history.
It sits between The Walls of Yarikawa and The Ghost of Yarikawa in the act's sequence, and it is where the alliance Jin has just built is tested rather than celebrated.
In the game’s own framing: Yarikawa is under siege and its best archers have gone missing. Bringing them home would arm the defence and prove Jin and Yuna mean what they say.

Full walkthroughSpoilers
- 01Meet Yuna in Old Yarikawa
She is beside a steaming pot.
- 02Examine the dead Mongols
Directly in front of you.
- 03Search for tracks
Footprints two steps from the bodies.
- 04Follow the tracks
Down the path, up a wooden ramp, uphill through grass, past a rock formation, down to the road, then through a gate toward a house.
- 05Search the house
Taka is inside, and badly startled.
- 06Save Taka from the bear
Fire arrows, or a Perfect Dodge into the execution.
- 07Search the house again
The goza mats on the floor to the left, and the arrows on the right.
- 08Speak with Yuna
She is crouched by the dying embers.
- 09Search near the campfire
The cart of explosive barrels, and more footprints by the mat. Shoot the powder before the group spreads out. Once they scatter, the barrel is worth one kill instead of four.
- 10Follow the tracks downhill
With Yuna, until you spot archers ahead. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.
- 11Approach the archers
Down this hill and up the next; there are three of them. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.
- 12Survey the Mongol camp
Complete the observation. Survey points are not decoration — each one you mark puts an objective or a hazard on your map, and skipping them means finding the same things the hard way.
- 13Speak with Taka
Automatic dialogue.
- 14Time the ambush
When Taka asks about timing and Jin answers that they are close enough, put an arrow into the red barrel below.
- 15Defeat the Mongols
Explosive and fire arrows from the high ground on the blue-armoured soldiers, then go down for the last few.
- 16Speak with Daikoku
On the road, to finish.
Enemies in this tale, and how to fight them
Strengths
- Archers — Deal with them before you commit to the melee, because everything else in the fight becomes harder while arrows are landing. Take them with your own bow, drop them from stealth before the fight opens, or close the distance immediately — archers are poor at close range and fold quickly once you are on them. Where the tale gives you high ground, use it: an elevated position means only one side of the field can answer you.
Rewards
- Major Legend IncreaseA large step toward the next Legend rank. Legend gates your Ghost Weapon unlocks and your health and Resolve upgrades, so main and Mythic Tales are the fastest way to raise it.
