Overview

Yuna saves Jin's life for a reason, and she says so. She needs a samurai to help free her brother, and Jin is the only one left breathing.

She is a thief by necessity in a class system that gave her no other option, and the game is careful never to let Jin's approval be the measure of her. When he objects to poison or to stabbing a man in the back, her replies are consistently the more practical ones — and the story sides with her often enough that his objections start to sound like a luxury.

Her real function is to be the island Jin was raised above. Through Yuna the game shows what the invasion costs people who were never going to be defended by eighty samurai on a beach, and what they were already surviving before the Mongols arrived.

Their arc runs to 4 tales, beginning with The Tale of Yuna and ending with Message in Blood. The ally questlines are the best writing in the game and they run in order — each tale assumes the ones before it, so they reward being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.

Biography

Yuna and her younger brother Taka grew up poor and were separated from any protection when the invasion began. Taka's value to the Mongols is his skill as a blacksmith; Yuna's plan for most of the early game is simply to get him back.

She is the one who introduces Jin to the tools that define the Ghost — smoke, poison, the value of striking from where you cannot be seen. She does this without ceremony, because to her they are not a philosophy but the way people without armour stay alive.

Her arc runs alongside Jin's rather than under it: as he gains a reputation, she gains options, and the question of what she wants once her brother is safe becomes the thing the story actually asks of her.

  • The Black Wolf3 of 4 · Act 2 · Killing Altan’s local ally — the Black Wolf — to force the warlord himself into the open.

Trivia

  • Yuna's Tale is one of the questlines that unlocks Ghost equipment, tying her narrative role as Jin's tutor in dishonourable tactics directly to the tools you get.
  • She is the first character to call Jin the Ghost, before the rumour spreads to the Mongols.
