OverviewSpoilers

The opening of the Iki Island expansion — Jin follows word of a Mongol force to an island where his family name is a curse.

Journey Into the Past takes Jin off Tsushima and onto Iki, where refugees tell him the Mongol Eagle Tribe under Ankhsar Khatun has seized control. The title is not decorative: the expansion is built around Jin’s childhood and his father’s campaign here.

It establishes the expansion’s central problem immediately. On Tsushima, being a Sakai opens doors. On Iki it closes them — Kazumasa’s campaign against the island’s raiders left scars the islanders have not forgotten.

In the game’s own framing: Strange happenings in southern Toyotama. Investigating them introduces the Shaman, the drug, and the name of the Mongol leader on Iki.

Full walkthroughSpoilers

  1. 01
    Arrive at the village

Try to talk to the villagers.

  2. 02
    Investigate the settlement

They have lost their minds and cannot speak. Look for what did it.

  3. 03
    Examine the Mongol presence

Inspect the yurt and the small shrine beside it, toward the shoreline.

  4. 04
    Defeat the Mongols

The cutscene spawns them, including a new enemy — the Shaman, whose songs buff everyone around him. Kill the Shaman first, then the rest. Kill the Shaman before anything else — while he is chanting every Mongol near him hits harder, moves faster and blocks better, so removing him is worth more than removing two ordinary soldiers.

  5. 05
    Interrogate the Shaman

He gives up the Eagle, the Mongol leader on Iki Island. Kill the Shaman before anything else — while he is chanting every Mongol near him hits harder, moves faster and blocks better, so removing him is worth more than removing two ordinary soldiers.

  6. 06
    Reach the boat

After the scene with Yuna, it is behind the yurt on the right.

  7. 07
    Survive the storm

The boat capsizes and Jin washes up on the island’s shore.

  8. 08
    Navigate the smuggling hideout

Across bone-covered ground and through the old hideout.

  9. 09
    Clear the blocked path

Planks bar the exit — hold to fill the bar, then break through.

  10. 10
    Explore Iki Island

Descending to the bottom opens the island.

Enemies in this tale, and how to fight them

Strengths

  • Shaman — Kill first, before anything else on this list. A Shaman does not fight you directly — he chants, and while he is chanting every Mongol around him hits harder, moves faster and blocks better. Killing him is worth more than killing any two of the others. Kunai to stagger, then a heavy attack, is the fastest answer; sustained Wind Stance pressure also works. Shamans usually stand back from the line, often on rocks or ruins, so the bow is frequently the cleanest route.

Rewards
