Overview

A Tale of Tsushima in Toyotama, sensei ishikawa tale 5 of 9 — part of Ishikawa hunting Tomoe, the student who took his archery to the Mongols.

The ally questlines are the game’s best writing and they run in order, so this tale assumes the ones before it. Sensei Ishikawa’s arc rewards being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.

In the game’s own framing: Rumours of a Japanese archer helping the Mongols in Akashima. Ishikawa suspects Tomoe and has gone to look without waiting.

This is tale 5 of 9 in Ishikawa’s arc. The ally questlines run in order and assume the ones before them, so they reward being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.

Full walkthroughSpoilers

  1. 01
    Find Ishikawa

Ride due east from camp until you find him already fighting.

  2. 02
    Defeat the first group

A lot of archers — block their shots or answer with your own bow. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.

  3. 03
    Reunite with Ishikawa

    Slightly north. He is wounded.

  4. 04
    Fight the archer group

Block the double shots until they reload, then close and finish it in melee. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.

  5. 05
    Speak with Ishikawa

    A cutscene.

  6. 06
    Ride northwest together

Stopping to examine fallen peasants, then continuing on foot.

  7. 07
    Survey the camp

Find and examine the observable points. Survey points are not decoration — each one you mark puts an objective or a hazard on your map, and skipping them means finding the same things the hard way.

  8. 08
    Clear Tomoe’s camp

Open with stealth if you can, but archers and brutes are the priority once it goes loud. Switch to Moon Stance for the Brutes: they shrug off ordinary damage and Moon's heavy overheads are what actually stagger them. Their big swings are unblockable, so dodge rather than block and answer in the gap afterwards. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.

TipMoon staggers Brutes; nothing else in the melee kit reliably does.

  9. 09
    Search for evidence

Two scrolls — a supply list on a crate near Ishikawa, and a letter on a crate inside the eastern hut.

Enemies in this tale, and how to fight them

Strengths

  • Archers — Deal with them before you commit to the melee, because everything else in the fight becomes harder while arrows are landing. Take them with your own bow, drop them from stealth before the fight opens, or close the distance immediately — archers are poor at close range and fold quickly once you are on them. Where the tale gives you high ground, use it: an elevated position means only one side of the field can answer you.
  • Brutes — Moon Stance. Brutes soak an enormous amount of ordinary damage, and Moon's heavy overhead strikes are what actually stagger them. Their big swings are usually unblockable — red marker — so dodge those rather than trying to block, and answer in the window afterwards rather than trading. Some carry explosives. If you have Resolve banked, a Brute is the right place to spend it.

Rewards

  • Minor Legend Increase
A smaller step toward the next Legend rank — the size a side tale, a liberated settlement or a cleared encounter gives.
  • Minor Ranged Charm
A silver charm. Minor charms are weaker than major ones and go in the minor slots — you start with two major slots and unlock up to four minor ones by honouring Inari Shrines, for six equipped at once.
  • +2 Silk
Upgrade material. Silk, linen and leather are what armourers and swordsmiths charge to improve your gear.
