Kazumasa SakaiJin's father
Jin's father, killed in front of him when Jin was a boy — and, on Iki Island, remembered as the samurai who led a campaign the islanders have never forgiven.
Overview
Kazumasa appears only in memory, and he is one of the most consequential characters in the game.
Jin's father was killed in front of him during Jin's childhood, in a confrontation Jin was too small to affect. That helplessness is the lever the base game returns to whenever Jin has to choose between the correct action and the effective one.
The Iki Island expansion supplies the other half of the portrait. Kazumasa led a campaign against Iki's raiders years before the Mongol invasion — a campaign that left deep scars on the island and is why its people hate the samurai, and Clan Sakai in particular, with such intensity.
That reframes him. In Tsushima he is a father Jin failed to save; on Iki he is the reason a whole population will not help Jin at all.
