KenjiSake merchant
A sake merchant, opportunist and reliable liar whose Tales are the game's comic relief — and who is useful far more often than he has any right to be.
Overview
Kenji is the release valve. In a game about a man losing his soul by degrees, he is a merchant trying to recover a stolen sake shipment.
He claims friendship with Jin considerably more often than Jin confirms it, and the running joke works because the game plays it completely straight — Kenji is genuinely fond of him and genuinely exploiting him at the same time.
His practical value is information. He knows who is drinking with whom, which is exactly the kind of intelligence a lord's nephew would never gather and a Ghost needs constantly.
Their arc runs to 3 tales, beginning with Servant of The People and ending with The Delicate Art of Negotiation. The ally questlines are the best writing in the game and they run in order — each tale assumes the ones before it, so they reward being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.
Biography
Kenji's Tales generally begin with a scheme and end with Jin cleaning up after it. The structure is repetitive on purpose; the pleasure is in watching Jin's patience thin.
Underneath the comedy the game uses him to show occupation from the angle of somebody whose livelihood, not whose honour, is at stake — a perspective the samurai cast has no access to.

- He is one of the only characters who treats the Ghost's reputation as a marketing opportunity.
