Masako's family was murdered — not by the Mongols, but by other Japanese, during the confusion the invasion created. Her Tale is a revenge story running underneath a war story.

She is introduced as a fully formed warrior who needs no training arc and no rescuing. Where the other allies are learning something from Jin or teaching him something, Masako mainly requires that he keep up.

Her investigation turns up a conspiracy inside Tsushima's own nobility, which is the game's way of establishing that the island's problems predate the Khan and will outlast him. She pursues it with a single-mindedness the story treats as neither admirable nor condemnable — simply hers.

Their arc runs to 9 tales, beginning with The Tale of Lady Masako and ending with The Sister Betrayed. The ally questlines are the best writing in the game and they run in order — each tale assumes the ones before it, so they reward being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.

• The Thief7 of 9 · Act 2 · One of the Adachi conspirators is hiding in Kushi, which is thick with Mongols. Reaching them before the Mongols do is the whole problem.
• The Conspirator8 of 9 · Act 2 · The list is nearly exhausted, but whoever organised the attack on Clan Adachi is still not on it.
• The Sister Betrayed9 of 9 · Act 3 · Masako has found her sister at Clan Kikuchi’s old fort. What follows is duty against family, and a sacrifice that brings honour and a great burden with it.

• Completing her Tale line is one of the routes to additional charms and technique points, so her story is mechanically as well as narratively rewarding.
• She is one of the few characters who never asks Jin to reconsider becoming the Ghost.
