Overview
A Tale of Tsushima in Toyotama, lady masako tale 5 of 9 — part of Masako tracking the people who slaughtered the Adachi clan.
The Fool belongs to Lady Masako’s questline: Masako tracking the people who slaughtered the Adachi clan. It is lady masako tale 5 of 9, set in Toyotama.
The ally questlines are the game’s best writing and they run in order, so this tale assumes the ones before it. Lady Masako’s arc rewards being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.
In the game’s own framing: Masako has gone to Umugi looking for more of the conspirators. The cove is full of smugglers and criminals, which is exactly why a fugitive would choose it.
This is tale 5 of 9 in Masako’s arc. The ally questlines run in order and assume the ones before them, so they reward being followed as a sequence rather than picked at.

Full walkthroughSpoilers
- 01Travel to the Umugi Cove entrance
Masako is standing among the red flowers.
- 02Follow Masako
Up a small hill nearby.
- 03Trail the brother
Stay back and out of sight — across the cliff, through tall grass, over the logs, then carefully across the rocks and ledges. Hold still while he argues with a merchant, then follow him down the steps. Crouch into the grass and let the patrol pattern settle before you move; the grass breaks line of sight entirely rather than just slowing detection.
- 04Speak with Masako
On the overlooking rock, watching the house he went into.
- 05Follow Masako
Jump down and get behind the rock with her for a cutscene.
- 06Trail the brothers
Crouch through the stilts under the house, stay under the bridge as they cross it, then move up through the long grass to where they gather.
- 07Defeat the bandits
Archers and shield-bearers, in the open. Shield-bearers need Water Stance, and specifically its heavy attacks — light attacks chip uselessly at a raised shield. Deal with the archers first. Everything else in the fight is harder while arrows are landing, and archers fold quickly once you are on them — or take them at range before you commit.
TipWater is the only efficient answer to a raised shield.
- 08Loot the bodies
One of them is carrying a letter that matters.
- 09Speak with Masako
She is examining another body.
Enemies in this tale, and how to fight them
Strengths
- Archers — Deal with them before you commit to the melee, because everything else in the fight becomes harder while arrows are landing. Take them with your own bow, drop them from stealth before the fight opens, or close the distance immediately — archers are poor at close range and fold quickly once you are on them. Where the tale gives you high ground, use it: an elevated position means only one side of the field can answer you.
- Shield-bearers — Water Stance, and specifically its heavy attacks — that is what breaks a raised shield. Trying to chip through the front of a shield with light attacks wastes the fight. Stagger them first so the guard comes up and breaks, then go through the opening quickly before it closes.
- Straw Hats / ronin — Japanese swordsmen rather than Mongols, and they fight like it — faster and more technical than the invaders, with less armour. Stone Stance still applies. Standoffs work well against them, and against unarmoured ronin a won standoff often kills outright.
Rewards
- Minor Legend IncreaseA smaller step toward the next Legend rank — the size a side tale, a liberated settlement or a cleared encounter gives.
- Minor Utility CharmA silver charm. Minor charms are weaker than major ones and go in the minor slots — you start with two major slots and unlock up to four minor ones by honouring Inari Shrines, for six equipped at once.
- +2 SilkUpgrade material. Silk, linen and leather are what armourers and swordsmiths charge to improve your gear.
